This year in Science 9, students took part in an exciting case study focused on the recent Artemis II mission. Through this real-world connection to space exploration, students explored a variety of topics related to human space travel and modern space technology. This case study also placed a strong emphasis on literacy in science by engaging students with a variety of multimodal forms of communication and learning.
Students learned about the systems that make space exploration possible, including spacecraft design, rockets, and life-support systems used to support astronauts during missions.

As part of the case study, students evaluated the benefits, risks, and societal impacts of space exploration, while also learning about Canada’s important contributions to international space missions. Topics throughout the unit included learning about the Orion spacecraft, understanding the Space Launch System (SLS), exploring the challenges of space travel, and examining Canada’s role in advancing space exploration.
To make the learning experience even more engaging, students also used VR to explore the International Space Station and gain a firsthand perspective on life in space.
