On Friday, December 13, the STEMIA Junior High Chess Club competed in the Henry Wise Wood High School Semester 1 tournament.

Eleven STEMIA students, from grades 7 through 9, competed in a field of 100 players, ranging from beginner- to expert-level. Competing for STEMIA were Brian C. and Ryder M. (Gr. 9), Anish K., Aliza K., Dave M., Elliott M., and Fukuharu N. (Gr. 8), and Kaden B., Daniel C., Zain K., and Aahna N. (Gr. 7).

Highlights included a checkmate with six seconds remaining (while behind on time by 5 minutes!) and a centre-of-the board smothered mate.

The tournament was a great success to kick off the 2024-25 chess season.
