Our SW Junior High Digital Visual Design course, part of the New Media strand, has been using the STEMIA Design Process to design and create custom stickers.
Students began by brainstorming 31 or more ideas based on a series of prompts connected to their interests. Each brainstorm page was then passed to another student, who took on the role of a graphic designer and developed four promising sticker prototypes for their “client.” Using the brainstorm sheet as inspiration, students sketched their initial designs and shared them for feedback.

Once the prototypes were complete, the student designers met with their clients to conduct interviews, gathering feedback and direction for the final sticker design. Students documented their interview questions and notes as part of an assignment, which also helped guide the creation of a refined final sketch.

These final paper sketches were then scanned and imported into Adobe Illustrator, where they were locked onto the artboard. Students applied their skills with shapes, paths, vectors, and colour to trace over their sketches and create polished digital graphics.
The completed designs were printed and cut using Cricut Design Studio, allowing each client to receive their finished stickers during the Showcase phase of the project.
Students will continue to build their graphic design and Illustrator skills in the upcoming T-shirt design and creation unit.
