On February 13, 2026 a group of options teachers visited the SAIT Art Smith Aero Centre for Training and Technology. “Globally recognized for aviation training, students from all over the world come to learn at SAIT’s Art Smith Aero Centre.” While the spaces are aviation-focused, there are strong connections to making, manufacturing, and engineering throughout the facility.

Our tour began in the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) lab, where we learned about the diploma and certificate programs, as well as the job opportunities available to graduates. We explored the hardware and software used both in the program and in industry. One of the highlights of the tour was seeing the 400x zoom camera in action. This technology is used across many industries, and the demand for trained drone operators continues to grow.

Next, we visited the airport hangar, where aircraft mechanic students were working on planes and helicopters. As we toured the space, we learned more about the six different aviation programs offered at SAIT.

Our next step is to host students and staff from the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems program at the SW campus. They will meet with our Grade 9 students in the Foundations of Flight option and demonstrate their professional drones in action, conducting LiDAR modeling of our school, mapping the surrounding area, and more. We look forward to seeing how this partnership grows and evolves as our Foundations of Flight course officially launches in the fall.
