STEMIA SW Junior High Science and Options
Our grade 8 students at the SW Junior High participated in an interesting dissection last week, the lungs and heart from a white tail deer that was recently harvested in Alberta by one of our teachers. During the field dressing phase the heart, lungs, and windpipe of the deer were removed tofether and intact. This provided a rare opportunity for the students to see the connection between the respiratory and circulatory systems.
During the demonstration we dissected the organs while learning about the body systems and how they interact during respiration and circulation. These students will be dissecting a frog later in the year and will have the opportunity to compare and contrast the anatomies.
We demostrated the inflation of the lungs using the MakerSpace shop vaccum, including an accidental separation of the pleura (a thin layer of tissue that surrounds and protects the lungs) from the lung.
