After two months of preparation, including many 7:30 a.m. mornings, dedicated Grade 9 Science students brought their research and critical thinking skills to life in the first Science 9 Debate. Exploring some of Alberta’s most pressing issues—nuclear energy, data centres, and electric vehicles—students delivered compelling arguments and demonstrated a deep understanding of the science and policy behind each topic.

Watch parts of the debate here!

Should Alberta Adopt Nuclear Energy?
Prabhnoor and Kate, on the proposition side, argued for nuclear energy’s role in reducing emissions and providing stable power. Caleb and Damola represented the opposition, raising key concerns about cost, safety, and waste. After a well-fought debate, the proposition team took the win.

Large-Scale Data Centres in Grande Prairie
Tate, Emily, and Sarah supported the development of data centres, emphasizing economic growth and energy efficiency. Siyonna, Bani, and Bella challenged them with strong points about environmental impact and infrastructure demands. The judges ultimately sided with the proposition team.

Accelerating the Shift to Electric Vehicles
Prisha and Karmin made the case for increased EV infrastructure and government incentives. Neel, Prayush, and Yuvi countered with concerns about Alberta’s readiness and the environmental cost of EV production. The results ended with a tie in score! As the burden of proof falls on the proposition, the opposition were determined the winners.

Celebrating Individual Excellence
Sarah was awarded Top Speech for her clear and persuasive delivery, and Neel earned Top Rebuttal for his sharp and strategic responses.

Behind the Scenes: Two Months of Hard Work
This debate was the result of eight weeks of research, writing, and rehearsing. Students not only deepened their scientific understanding but also learned how to build arguments, speak with confidence, and engage in respectful discourse.

A huge thank-you goes out to our incredible volunteers and organizers: Hannah, Aditi, Kailey, Grace, Logan, and Parnika, and Zobia whose support helped bring this event to life. Their planning and behind-the-scenes work made everything run smoothly. Thank you as well to all teachers involved – Mr. Hoffman, Ms. Bretner, Mr. Joseph, Mr. Butler, Mr. McWilliam, and Mr. Wood.

As well, thank you to all our dedicated judges, many of whom came from industry and science backgrounds. They gave great feedback to all debaters!

Looking Ahead
Congratulations to all participants for their dedication and professionalism. The quality of discussion and the depth of understanding on display were truly impressive. With young minds like these leading the way, Alberta’s future in science and innovation looks bright.
