On December 3, 2024 the STEMIA junior high Skills Club participated in the province-wide Skills Exploration Day where the challenge was to design and build a prototype for an “Alternative Dwelling”.

Students have been meeting on Wednesdays during the lunch hour in the Maker Space to learn new skills using the tools and materials provided by Skills Alberta for the challenge. Students also used the Design Process to arrive at the different promising solutions.

We were excited to share our designs to the province during the gallery time. Our full scale prototypes differed from most schools who chose to create small scale desk top models. Our largest design, The Bubble House, was able to inflate and fit 20 of our team members!

Skills Club will resume in the new year with a new challenge that we’ll be sure to share here.
