On Monday, October 28th, an Engineering Business Strategist and Transit Planner from the Women in Transit Committee presented to the Grade 9 students about Zero Emission Buses (ZEBs), service design, and route optimization. This presentation served as an introduction to our Environmental Chemistry unit, where students will investigate energy transformations and the Alberta Power Grid. It was an excellent opportunity for students to see how scientific knowledge and data shape real-life projects—such as those implemented by Calgary Transit. They learned about the technologies behind ZEBs and explored various unique careers in STEM and opportunities available for students. Many students were especially engaged, knowing they’ll soon be using Calgary Transit in high school.
The following day, students participated in a discussion post to reflect on the presentation. They also reviewed their own bus routes, considering the factors and data used to optimize their routes.
