Our lunchtime Drone Club has begun meeting during lunch hours in the Maker Space. This year we have a few options for interested students who want to learn how to operate and understand these amazing machines. On Mondays we have the boys team, on Tuesdays we have our girls team, and on Thursdays we will race.
What Will They Learn?
The club starts by introducing students to drone technology and safety protocols—essential knowledge for flying responsibly. Once they’ve mastered the basics, students will dive into hands-on flight training using simulators. We are using FPV Skydive which can be found on STEAM and we encourage students to bring their own video game controllers to connect and fly. These virtual environments are a great way to practice flying without ever leaving the ground!
As students become more skilled, they’ll get to pilot one of the school’s 6 FPV (First Person View) drones in the classroom and outdoors. We will even be setting up a drone racing circuit, where students can race head to head.
Real-World Connections
Each session doesn’t just focus on flying; we also explore the many real-world applications of drone technology. Students will learn how drones are used in industries like aerial photography, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and more. It’s a great way to discover how a fun hobby can lead to future careers in fields such as engineering, science, and media. We hope to connect this year with the SAIT Centre for Innovation and Research in Unmanned Systems (CIRUS) to learn about their program as well.
