Our junior high school is excited to be participating in the “Hack the House” Challenge with Beakerhead at Telus Spark which is sponsored by Imperial Oil. Our task will be to to ‘hack’ a piece of used household furniture and transform it into a rideable machine that runs on sustainable power sources. We will be assembling a team at the junior high to design and build our entry for this year’s event which will take place during Beakerhead in September 2024.

Students who are interested in joining the team can attend our weekly club meeting in the Maker Space on Tuesdays at lunch. This club began the year by participating in the Skills Alberta Challenge, and has since been designing, building and assembling solar powered Hydroponic Growing Systems with our A+ for Energy Grant.

Our 2023 entry into the challenge was a cordless drill powered recycling bin that used solar panels and a power station to recharge the batteries. We have our eyes on this file cabinet from our school’s storage room as the chassis for our next creation. Watch the video below to see our build, and the final result at Telus Spark where our team won an award!
