On September 17 our STEMIA junior high team participating in the 2023 Hack the House Challenge for Beakerhead will be showcasing their sustainable vehicle at Telus Spark. The challenge was to build a sustainable vehicle using a piece of household furniture.

The team of grade 9 students began working on the challenge when it was announced in May. We spent many lunch hours turning the blue recycling bin into a cordless drill powered vehicle recharged through a solar panel and power station generously funded through the Beakerhead Hack the House grant.

Our team encountered some challenges in the build with the school calendar and the students’ moving from the junior high building in the south to the high school building near the University of Calgary. Our project was on pause for the summer months, making the few weeks before the event very busy for a new group of builders. Despite the setback in timing, we still hope to have an operable vehicle to complete the course around the atrium of Telus Spark.

If you are interested in attending, our challenge will take place at 3pm at Telus Spark. There are also a variety of other incredible Beakerhead installations and events happening this weekend during Beakerhead.
