We are very excited to announce that STEM Innovation Academy was selected to receive an A+ for Energy grant for the 2023/24 school year! We could not have done this without our partner Dr. Robin Owens, a retired geophysicist and friend of our school.

Our Idea for the Grant:

The ‘BigFoot’ Carbon Footprint Game – and The Fountain of Energy

To promote awareness in students of their own Personal Carbon Footprint (PCF) a game will be developed by Dr. Robin Owens a retired geophysicist and friend of our school , tasking players to estimate their family’s Footprint via the ‘BigFoot’ Game.

Our Energy Fountain will manifest the energy generated by solar panels and a wind turbineto pump water up and over a waterfall. The more energy being generated sustainably, the more water we will see pumped through our Energy Fountain.

We also hope to extend this project to power a Hydroponics unit where such energy could also help our grade 7’s grow food in their Plants for Food and Fibre unit.

The Purpose:

Through this project we hope to educate students in the ways in which we all, as individuals, act as Consumers of Energy and therefore Producers of CO2. We also hope to quantify how our day-to-day actions (lifestyle) contribute to the global issue of climate change and to convey a sense of personal responsibility – and therefore opportunity to examine and change our habits to be more sensitive to the environment that we depend on for food and warmth.
