On Friday March 17, our grade 8 Biomedical Engineering Option classes travelled to the University of Calgary to tour and learn more about the Nanoscience Program in the Science Faculty.
The field trip included a short introductory lecture with Max Anikovskiy an Associate Professor from the program followed by a tour of the Nanoscience lab that included some demonstration experiments.
Demonstrations shared with our students:
– Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles
– Synthesis of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles
– Chemiluminescence of Luminol
– Emission of Cadmium Telluride Quantum Dots
– Scanning Electron Microscopy
The Nano Science Lab is located in the EEEL (Energy Environment and Experiential Learning) Building at the University of Calgary. Students were able to see the experiential lab spaces while learning about and observing demonstration labs. Our students were gifted 4 vials of Super Paramagnetic Iron Nanoparticles to bring back to the school and to inspire students to continue their learning in this area.
