On February 24th, STEM Innovation Academy hosted our second annual science fair. Students involved this year worked diligently at lunches and at home to create some powerful learning and exceptional science communication through their presentations and trifolds.

A special thank you to our judges who had the difficult task of scoring each of the incredible projects. Their time, expertise and passion helped make this experience a memorable one for our learning community.

Experimental Winners: Experimental projects require the student scientist to test a hypothesis through the scientific process and experimentation.

Joséphine  – How does negative and positive reinforcement impact an athlete?

Tristan – A study of DNA: In memory of Dr. Alan Grant

Ilhan – Fingerprint Fun

Innovation Winners: Innovation type projects see the students developing creative solutions to unique problems.

Joel – Using Real-Time Object Detection and Machine Learning Techniques to Improve the Safety and Quality of Lives

Aarav – Rear End Crash Detection and Injury Reduction

Elliott  – Maglevs in Canada

Study Winners: Study projects are a deep dive into a subject where students become experts on their topic and share what they’ve learned through their trifolds and presentations.

Aryaman  – Using CRISPR to cure Color Blindness

Riddhima – Cryonics: An attempt at immortality

Sara  – Can bioengineering alter genetic mutations and create organs using stem cells?

The next step for several of our projects is to share their learning at the Calgary Youth Science Fair in April 2023. We are very proud of all of our student scientists, and know our students will represent the school incredibly well at the city wide event.
